Are Starbucks Rewards accounts shared between Canada and the US?

Starbucks publishes a Canadian Rewards agreement for Canadian accounts and a U.S. agreement for U.S. accounts. Your home-market terms determine your level earn rate and benefits. That is different from saying Stars can never be earned while travelling: the current Canadian terms expressly describe qualifying purchases at participating stores in the U.S. and Puerto Rico and explain how they are credited without applying currency exchange to the purchase value for Star calculations.

Use the account and app region already associated with your membership, scan before paying, and confirm that the specific store participates. Do not create a second account merely because you crossed the border unless Starbucks support tells you it is necessary.

A Starbucks Card keeps its balance in the base currency of the country where it was issued, but it is not categorically region-locked. Starbucks Card terms say most participating Starbucks stores in North America accept the card and explain that an eligible cross-border purchase is converted from the store's local currency to the card's base currency before being deducted.

Licensed airport, grocery, hotel and bookstore locations can be exceptions, so ask before ordering or check whether the store lists digital Rewards support. The receipt may display the store's local currency even though the underlying card balance remains in CAD or USD.

Since March 10, 2026, both markets use Green, Gold and Reserve levels, but Gold earns at a different rate:

• Canada: Green 1 Star/$1 CAD, Gold 1.5, Reserve 1.7
• U.S.: Green 1 Star/$1 USD, Gold 1.2, Reserve 1.7

Both markets start Gold qualification at 500 level Stars and Reserve at 2,500 after reaching Gold. Redemption uses the current 25 / 60 / 100 / 200 / 300 / 400-Star structure, but eligible items, value caps and participating-store availability can vary by country and location. Check the app before relying on a particular item.

• Scan while signed into the home-market Rewards account; guest checkout does not earn Stars
• Confirm the store participates, especially at licensed kiosks
• Expect card-balance currency conversion rather than a balance transfer
• Check the home-market app for the Star posting and current reward eligibility
• For a missing transaction, keep the receipt and contact Starbucks support rather than opening a duplicate account

Free cafe refills are a separate same-visit coffeehouse policy in the U.S. and Canada; they are not unlocked by Gold status.
