How many Starbucks are there in the US?

Starbucks Corporation reports approximately 16,000+ U.S. locations in recent shareholder filings. Our directory independently indexes 11,041 of these, covering all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and U.S. territories where public data is available.

The gap between the corporate figure and our index is explained by two things: (1) licensed stores inside corporate campuses, military bases, and other restricted venues are not publicly mapped, and (2) stores that opened, closed, or relocated very recently may not yet appear in either figure.

Starbucks density per capita is highest in Washington state (the chain's home market) and the broader Pacific Northwest. California has the largest raw count. Urban cores in New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, and Boston each host several hundred locations, while states like Wyoming, Montana, and the Dakotas have far fewer stores per capita.

Starbucks has steadily expanded U.S. store count for three decades, though the rate slowed in the mid-2010s as the company focused on remodels and drive-thru conversions. COVID-19 triggered closures of ~400 underperforming urban stores in 2020, but total count rebounded as suburban and drive-thru openings accelerated. Our index is an OpenStreetMap-derived snapshot; its publication date and limitations are disclosed in the methodology.
